A DVD+R is a once writable optical disc that typically has 4.7GB worth of memory space, launched in 2002. This format is in direct competition to the DVD-R format, and many media players are not compatible with both. Over the past few years, manufacturers have begun to make media players that are compatible with both formats. In 2003, dual layer technolgy was added to the DVD+R format, creating the opportunity to add capacity, up to 8.5GB.

DVD+R applications are most commonly used in non-volatile data storage, audio and vidoe since they can only be written to once. These applications are great to use for home DVD copying such as computer back up, DVD burning for audio and for video.
