USB Memory Cards Take a Licking and Keep on Ticking

You have probably heard how sturdy and durable the new memory cards are but as you are about to discover, they can handle far more abuse than you might have expected. Of course, you want to do everything possible to protect a USB memory card but sometimes, accidents happen. Typically, the design would come with some type of cap, which helps protect the interior of the card from dirt and debris. We suggest you leave the cap on when the memory stick is not in use. Of course, damage can occur.  For instance, if the device were accidentally crushed, the circuitry portion of the memory card would not work.

On the other hand, these small wonders are made to withstand a number of common mishaps, such as forgetting it in a pocket and running it through the wash. If this were to happen, simply set the memory card out so it can air dry completely. Actual tests have been performed to prove this point, going as far as to submerge a memory card in water, freeze it using dry ice, and soaking it in a number of acidic liquids. The results were the same – a card whereby stored data could be recovered.  While we do not recommend you go this far, we are confident in saying that different types of cards such as SDHC or micro m2 memory would take a licking and keep on ticking.
