A lot of computer users have heard to back up their hard drive information, but many are not familiar with the function of the hard drive. A hard drive is a non-volatile storage device that digitally stores information from your computer of other electronic device. The name hard drive was coined to describe a different ‘drive’ from the actual technology medium that it is associated with. Tape drives, floppy disk drives and floppy drives are separate from the hard drive.

A hard drive is actually a rigid disk drive and is typically a sealed unit. Hard drive applications can include digital video recorders, digital audio recorders and digital cameras. The information from each of these devices is stored on their hard drive. Some technology devices today have removable hard drives.

The storage capacities for hard drives increase every year, with the current largest hard drive being able to store 1 TB. Typical desktop hard drives store closer to 120-300 GB’s of data. Laptop hard drives tend to be slower than desktops and are not able to store as much data.

It is crucial to back up any information that you store on your hard drives to prevent data loss, as they are very sensitive and any interference can cause you to quickly lose important data. There are reminders and software programs that have been designed to remind you to back up your hard drive data.
